Headspace ecosystem

It was in this role as UX Design Director that I was able to greatly affect the path of a company which had seen moderate success and help shape it into a top brand experience in the health sector.

Even more gratifying than the product and design team’s direct successes was the satisfaction I experienced through feedback received from our users about how much our product experience impacted their lives so personally. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to help shape the product experience of an organization that made such a personal impact on so many lives and continues to do so.

Project Type
Comprehensive user research for product development and business objectives.

Role
UX Design Lead – user research; product design strategy; project & team management; product ethics.

Context
Upon joining Headspace as their first designer in the newly formed product team, I immediately began collecting data and institutional information to catalog. There was already a large amount of anecdotal familiarity and scattered data in the 6-year old organization but none of it had yet been recorded consistently for consolidation and analysis.

Opportunity
It was clear that to move forward with a successful product development program we would need to know who our existing users were, what made them satisfied users and how we might align their desires with the organization’s business goals.

Research

Content Session Analysis
Known as “Take 10”, first ten days of a new user’s journey were crucial in determining success
(LTV and retention). The product team tracked various data points and I created this document to visualize user drop-off, messaging type and frequency of marketing content. This was the first step towards correlating various features of the new user journey to begin applying incremental
product improvements.

User Attributes
After conducting user research surveys and live interviews, I worked with our design researcher to develop documents that visualized over a dozen core attributes.

Persona Day Loops
Based on core personas developed after user interviews, I mapped typical cycles which identified windows of benefit that Headspace could be applied to throughout daily patterns.

Usage Strings
Employing individual day loops as a foundation, I then strung them together to form a complete cycle of opportunity for each personas Take 10 journey with the goal being continued usage.
